What should be done to stop the violence? Legalize marijuana. The cartels are fighting over border space so they can smuggle drugs into the United States. The majority of the drugs being smuggled is marijuana. Cannabis sativa has been consistently been shown in studies to be safer than alcohol while having many genuine medical uses. By legalizing and regulating marijuana not only would billions of tax payer dollars be saved from being wasted on the war on drugs but people could be put to work in the U.S. growing hemp and producing for personal and medical uses. Cops could spend their time busting hard drug users and violent criminals instead of arresting people and giving them a permanent record over possession of a plant. Taxes collected on marijuana could be used to help balance the budget and pay for social programs on drug education and treatment. The war on drugs has cost our country trillions of dollars and countless lives. From the murders resulting from the black market to all too common civilian shooting during police drug busts the blood is on the hands of the people that keep denying real life truths in the name of a world built around their morality. To them marijuana is one of the most evil substances in the world. To others its a miracle drug that helps them through chemotherapy, or treats their depression, or helps palsy victims. To others its a recreational drug such as alcohol or tobacco. Morality is relative. In America, the land of the “free”, our politicians shouldn’t be making laws based on their views of what is moral and what isn’t. They should be making laws based on facts and what the people want. That’s what a democracy should be. It’s time for the war on drugs to change. It’s time to legalize marijuana and make our country a safer and stronger America.
