Dick Cheney has reemerged from his crypt and is defending torture again to save his own ass. In an interview covered on CNN.fail he states that investigations into to the torturing of detainees is purely political. While I and pretty much most of the world would love to see Cheney swing for war crimes that’s not the reason these investigations should continue. While hate and revenge might appear to be the reason to most right wingers it actually boils down to if we are a country that respects the rule of law. It’s pretty obvious to anyone that the United States of America has tortured detainees to get dubious intelligence from them and now we need to find out who ordered the interrogators to break the law. We can’t just ignore the egregious accusations and let these people get away with this. If you are an American citizen then your hands are just as dirty. The acts were done in the name of the United States and we are all culpable if we just ignore it. The United States executed Japanese commanders after World War II for waterboarding our soldiers while they were in captivity. Why does it suddenly become alright when we do it? The world is watching us and I hope that we will do the right thing and bring those responsible for giving the orders up on the charges they deserve.
We need to quit throwing money down a bottomless hole and letting police kill innocent people in their “war on drugs”. Use the money to increase education and treatment and quit putting addicts in jail.

I found these pictures in a newspaper from a town near where I grew up. I found them quite hilarious and meant to post them back in March when I first found them. Unfortunately I misplaced the paper and didn’t find it again till now. Stephen Colbert did a report on Cane Fu during his June 22nd episode. Can old people use cane fu to defend themselves? Depends.

Your fail has arrived safely but a little soggy.

I refer to my home state of Iowa as the bluest red state there is. Even with an extremely large religious community gay marriage was legalized and hopefully medical marijuana will be legalized soon. Even with these overtures of compassion and acceptance Des Moines Area Regional Transit decided to pull advertisements from the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers which read “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.” They had lined up the ads to run for the duration of August to try and reach the large Iowa State Fair crowds that would be riding the buses but they were pulled after they received complaints. They were told that the ads were fine when they asked if they were appropriate but now DART is going back on this saying they had never been approved. This is the same story that has played out in England and other states in the U.S. Just simply trying to let people know that atheism exists using a billboard is seen as a personal attack on people’s religious beliefs. Billboard company Lamar recently pulled atheist advertisements after saying they were too offensive. What about all the billboards I have to read with quotes from an angry god on them or billboards showing Barack Obama and the World Trade Center with “Don’t vote for a Democrat.” on it? Now that is just plain offensive. Simply asking people whether they believe in God should not be considered offensive. If anything it should start a dialog between the religious and the non-religious. The fact that most religious people instantly get all WHARRGARBL and any chance for a reasonable debate gets immediately thrown out the window is the reason atheist organizations keep putting up these ads. We have been marginalized and forced to keep our opinions to ourselves simply because we are a minority. I’ve always said there are two ways of guaranteeing that you won’t win an election. The first is to deny the Holocaust happened, the second is to come out as an atheist.
